Shala Marshall Named Finalist for 2018 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year
Jenks Public Schools’ teacher Shala Marshall was named one of 12 finalists for 2018 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year in an announcement on Monday by the Oklahoma State Department of Education.
Marshall, a native of Ketchum, Oklahoma, teaches Spanish III, AP Spanish Literature, and AP Spanish Language at Jenks High School. In addition to her work in the classroom, Marshall – better known to her students as Señora Marshall – is also the sponsor of Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica and Spanish Club.
“I am honored to be selected as a finalist for Oklahoma Teacher of the Year knowing that Oklahoma schools are rich with talented and dedicated teachers who are equally deserving of this recognition,” stated Marshall. “I am extremely proud to represent Jenks Public Schools in this endeavor and I am excited to share Jenks' commitment to excellence in teaching and learning. I am very grateful to my colleagues, administrators, and students at Jenks High School who have helped me achieve this great honor.”
Marshall was named the 2017 District Teacher of the Year for Jenks Public Schools and was selected as a finalist for the state award after submitting an application packet to a panel of educators, members of the business community, legislators, and nonprofit partners. The 2018 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year will be revealed September 19 in a ceremony at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City.
“Shala is incredibly deserving of this honor and we are thrilled to have her represent Jenks High School alongside some of the most respected educators in our state,” commented Eric Fox, Associate Principal at Jenks High School. “Shala is one of the most passionate and engaging teachers I’ve ever had the privilege to work with, and she consistently demonstrates a special ability to connect with students.”
The selection of Marshall marks the fourth consecutive year for an educator from Jenks Public Schools to be named a finalist for the state award. Romney Nesbitt, an art teacher at Jenks West Intermediate, was a finalist for 2015. Jenniffer Callaway, an English teacher at the Jenks Alternative Center, was a nominee for 2016, and Brittany Hix, Language Arts teacher at Jenks West Intermediate, was up for 2017 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year.
If selected as Oklahoma Teacher of the Year, Marshall will begin a year of service in July of 2018. She will spend a year outside the classroom, meeting with teachers from across the state, advocating for education, and competing for National Teacher of the Year honors.
