Welcome to Second Grade!
Second grade is a fun and exciting school year for both students and teachers. Second grade students refine skills learned in first grade and acquire new academic and social skills. Each teacher will focus on providing a balanced literacy program addressing specific reading and writing strategies. Your child will be exposed to a variety of texts, literature, novel studies, writing, and editing experiences. Mathematically speaking, second grade students are exposed to the following areas: problem solving, number sense, estimation, measurement, geometry, algebraic reasoning, and data analysis. The world language curriculum is integrated and prepares students to communicate in Spanish while developing an awareness and appreciation of cultural similarities and differences. The science curriculum is inquiry based and emphasizes recognizing patterns, identifying properties, and seeking evidence. Through social studies, students gain knowledge of maps and geography, and study communities. We also provide opportunities for our students to develop higher level thinking skills.
Seven- and eight-year-olds are still quite active. Although they are now able to handle paper & pencil tasks more easily, they are still provided many opportunities to engage in hands-on learning activities. Some students work at desks while others complete assignments at learning centers. Each child is encouraged to work at his/her own rate and achieve to the fullest of his/her potential.
Second grade students also receive instruction in special area subjects. Your child will attend art, music, P.E., and the media center. Your child will have forty-five minutes for lunch and noon recess. The homeroom teacher will provide you with specific information about the daily classroom schedule.
We view you, the parents, as an integral partner in your child's educational process. Your child's teacher will communicate with you on a regular basis through newsletters and conferences. I hope this year is a memorable one for you and your child! Your support and cooperation are appreciated as we strive to offer your child a quality education! If I can ever be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to reach me. (299-4415 X5543).
